I would prefer a male Pacific parrotlet, yes. I was considering getting a turquoise. I have never seen a turquoise in person. I have seen pictures of birds labeled “turquoise” parrotlets but there seems to be an incredible range of color patterns that people are labeling as “turquoise,” everything from near-white, to what looks like a regular blue with no visible green on it, to obviously Photoshopped pics with the saturation cranked way up to make it look like the birds are glowing bright blue and green, like something out of Star Wars.

Actually I just noticed this pic on your site, on the New Arrivals section, that says “Female Blue Turquoise Parrotlet”

This looks like a regular blue to me, I don’t see any green on it, but it is labeled a turquoise. I thought turquoises were supposed to have a lot of green on their heads.

I am curious what you would consider to be a “turquoise”. Do you have any pics you can direct me to that represent what color patterns you mean when you say turquoise and dilute turquoise? Also what would the prices be for the male turquoise and male dilute turquoise?

Hello Gary!

I am glad you are interested in a Turquoise and that you have been researching about them! Yes, there are a variety of Turquoises; some come out with strong markings and some with very light signs of Turquoise Some people breed the turquoise gene with white parrotlets and they make white/light Turquoises. The Turquoise gene is dominant so you can blend it in any other color and it will show up. Of course, it will show up differently according to the primary color you put it with The female I have available on my website is with very light green marks of turquoise. You really need to see them in person to notice the difference from a regular blue. I have noticed that pictures do not do them justice and depending on the light of the place or the camera, they come out differently than what they are in reality If the camera is NO good, yes they can look from out of space!

I should have some pictures of the last blue Turquoises I sold, but again I remember that the pictures did not do them justice. I will try to take a picture of my dilute turquoise breeders to show you what they look like. I can’t wait to get my first Dilute Turquoise baby and post some pictures of this mutation. Babies are better models for pictures than breeders are

Do you have any lovebirds for sale? I am looking for 2, and am also open to suggestion for other listings.

I am sorry, but I don’t breed lovebirds anymore! I have been breeding Parrotlets for the last 9 years now. They are very similar to Lovebirds but in some ways they have some advantages. They are quieter than lovebird. Also, they don’t go through the mood swings that Lovebirds can go through especially if females. They come in a variety of colors just like lovebirds do. They are also much smarter and can learn how to talk.

I don’t suggest you to get 2 Lovebirds as well as I don’t suggest you to buy two Parrotlets. They will bond to each other and will not bond to you anymore. If you want a cuddly, interactive bird, you should have only one. However, if you don’t have a lot of time to spend with the bird, then it is O.K. to let him have a friend bird to spend time with

I would suggest for you to do a little more research about both breeds. There is a nice site called www.talkparrotlet.com for Parrotlets and ww.parrotparrot.com for Lovebirds.

Let me know what you find out and I will be glad to answer any more questions you might have.

What is he socialized to? Dogs? Little kids? Traveling? Men and women? Showers?

My birds are socialized to dogs barking ( I have a Maltese that barks for ten dogs!), children handling, men and women, kitchen noises, and TV. No, they are not used to traveling since they are sold young. This is something you will have to get him used to. After formula, I wean them on Higgins parakeet mix (50%) and Small Fruit and Veggies by Higgins (50%). When they turn 12 weeks or more I suggest Small Safflower Gold by Higgins. Water is something that I believe should never be forced to birds. As you bond to the bird, you will see if he likes water and how much of it

I understand you can find Parrotlets on the market priced much less than mine. That is true….. but it is up to you if you decide to go for a cheaper bird. I personally know that I cannot raise a healthy Parrotlet, tame, and genetically strong for less than what I charge. I buy the best seed mixes on the market and I supplement with fresh vegetables and fruits, and expensive vitamins (specifically made for birds!). I could choose to go with cheap brands or even use a different feed than birds’ seeds but I morally can’t. My objective is to breed beautiful healthy birds that can make great companions, and that I can feel good about. So, I am careful and not cheap in feeding them, and I am also careful in not overcrowding them. Having a small aviary helps me keep things under control. Lastly, I don’t inbreed. Inbreeding is a cheap way to get more production of the same gene (usually the most expensive ), putting at risk the health and the genetic quality of the offspring. I breed my birds in the most time consuming way and so, more costly. My customers and many friend breeders know that I am not fond of mutations and that I breed them very carefully. There is so much more that I could say but I don’t want to confuse you. The bottom line with Parrotlets is “You get what you pay for! “.

As for the videos, I am thinking to show my birds through Skype sometimes in the future. I need to check out the technicality of it.

Hello,

So this is a bit random but I was wondering if you could answer a question of mine, you seem to know a lot about birds and breeding.

So I got two parrotlets from a breeder in California. A male and female, we had them shipped to us and everything, it was about a $500 deal all together.
So anyways, they’re not as tame as I would have liked, the breeder breeds a ton of parrotlets and I dont think they were hand raised as well as I would have wanted to have tame, nice birds. And after an attempt of separating them to make them more tame, I gave up and put them back together because they love each other and had already bonded.
Anyways, these birds were supposedly born in the middle of Feburary of 2010. And I didnt have reason to doubt this until they started to try to breed.
I thought that parrotlets dont have any incline of sexual maturity until after their first molt, which I have not seen. I know its four months, so I was going to give it more time.
But I feel that these babies arent really babies at all. But I cant be curtain until after they’re older and I see them molt, if they haven’t already.
But if they were babies would they be trying to breed?
I do want them to breed so I can hand raise some of the babies and have a true hand raised bird like I wanted from the start.
I’m just worried they’re older but not old enough. I dont want the my female to become egg bound…what do you think?
Do they sound like they’re only about 3 and half, four months?

Well, you definitely have a breeding pair! They are bonded and are also mating. At 3 months it is a little unusual that parrotlets breed. Sometimes a naughtyÂ male might try to do do the move at 3 months but without being very successful Some pairs mate very well at 6 months but they are usually green. What color are yours? Mutations take longer to breed.

Now, there is a difference between mating and breeding. Some pairs like to mate but not necessarily breed. The breeding starts when you provide them with a breeding box. Then, they will go in the box and lay eggs and so on. If you don’t give them a box, they might just play around. If you see eggs dropping on the bottom of the cage, then you need to give them a box because that means they are ready to raise babies!

Since you don’t know their age ( 3 months sounds a little improbable!) , you might want to give them some extra calcium in the water. If they are young, they will benefit from not becoming egg-bond. If they are older, they will stay healthy and lay healthier eggs.

Now, what I am more concerned about is the genetic background of these birds! Are you sure they are not related? If they are related, I would not try to breed them! What color are they? What color are the parents? These are very important factors. You don’t want to hand up with blind or weak babies! If the seller thought that you just wanted two babies for pets, he might have very well sold you two siblings! If they haveÂ a band, you can check their number. If the numbers are close, they might be related!

Let me know their colors and if you think they are related. If you will have to separate them, I will suggest you a good genetic match!
