Friendly Bird Aviary breeds several species of birds. Our breeding collection includes: Pacific Parrotlets (Greens, Blues, Lutinos, Albinos, American Yellows, Blue Dilutes, Pastels), Green Cheek Conures (Cinnamons, Yellow Sided, Pineapples, and Turquoises), and Bourkes (Pinks, Rubinos, Lutinos).
GREEN CHEEK CONURES
Very few people are aware of the amazing personality of the Green Cheek Conure. This is mainly because the name “Conure” is quickly associated with the very loud and temperamental Conures of the “Aratinga” species. The green cheeks belong to a completely different family called “Pyrrhura Conures”. The first characteristic that differentiates the Pyrrhura family is the quietness of its members. The Green Cheek Conure produces a whistle sound and at times a screechy sound that is not disturbing at all! It is ideal for those people that want the size and intelligence of a Conure without the noise associated with other Conure species.
Green Cheeks are very cuddly and affectionate birds that enjoy human companionship. Their behavior sometimes reminds one of a dog because they usually like to be put belly up and be tickled around the neck and chest area. Once bonded, some purr just like cats do! Some of them go through a nipping stage right after weaning. It is a way for them to explore and adjust to the environment. It is important that during this phase the bird will not lose trust in humans! Never react negatively to their nipping but patiently redirect the behavior by offering food or a “time out” place with some toys! With time and patience, they will turn into the best behaved and affectionate pets! It is important to add that many of them never go through this nipping stage.
Green Cheeks love spending time outside their cage. They enjoy sitting on the shoulder or playing on a stand. Their cage should be large with plenty of toys. They love to play with toys and climb ladders and ropes. They are inquisitive little clowns!
Green Cheeks are very comical but are not able to talk much. They can be taught to say few words. Nevertheless, they have a body language all of their own!
PACIFIC PARROTLETS
Parrotlets are the smallest and cutest little parrots available on the market. They are only 4-5 inches long and weigh about 2 ounces, but are as intelligent as a large Amazon bird. That’s why they are called the “Smallest of the Amazon” because they are small, originate from the Amazon, and are as smart as a large specie. Pacific Parrotlets seem like “Eternal Teenagers” . This is because they are loving and affectionate but also as smart and manipulative as teenagers! They are ideal birds for those living in apartments, since they are quiet and take small spaces. Well socialized Parrotlets are affectionate, intelligent, and love human companionship. Males are known to talk. They can say several complete sentences. They come in a variety of bright colors.
LINOLATED PARAKEETS
At Friendly Bird Aviary, we are not breeding Lineolated Parakeets anymore. We have had a short experience with breeding them. We have raised only two in spring and fall 08. We find that the Lineolated Parakeets are very sweet birds and kind of unique in their behavior. They look for human interaction and they can talk more than any other small bird (they make a funny siren sound that mimics what you say!). They have the size of a lovebird but the looks of a large parrotlet. If hand fed at early age, they are super sweet, inquisitive, and active birds. Parent raised ones, instead, are very sedentary. They are not aggressive birds. They don’t go through a nipping or nibbling stage so they make great pets for anyone!
BOURKE PARAKEET
The Bourke Parakeet originates from Australia. Bourkes are very quiet and sedentary birds. They are mainly active during the early morning and at dawn. They have a sweet chirping sound and outstanding looks! They are a wonderful addition to a mixed aviary. They don’t attack other birds and get along with any other avian specie (just make sure that the other species you already have are not aggressive!). When hand fed, they love human interaction and are more active than parent raised Bourkes. They are perfect pets for anyone!
WHITE BELLIED CAIQUES
At Friendly Bird Aviary we don’t breed White Bellied Caiques anymore. We had a great experience breeding them for a little over a year but have decided to concentrate on smaller birds. White Bellied Caiques are the ideal choice for those who prefer a larger bird that has all the innocence and playfulness of a smaller specie. Caiques are very loving companions! They want to be with you and call you with a whistle. They can also learn how to talk. They are called clowns, not only because they play actively with toys, but also because they will do anything to get your attention like roll on the bottom of the cage, let you pet them belly up, or rub their heads! If well handled since young age, they are not aggressive or mean. If mishandled and neglected, they can become very aggressive. They need a large cage and and an outside perch for them to enjoy some company.
